What is Yog or Yoga ?
Yoga as taught in most of today’s yoga classes, do not cover the entire range of yoga experience. They may concentrate more on asana (physical yogic postures) and pranayama (controlled yogic breathing techniques), without understanding that these are only a part of the entire system of Yoga philosophy. Yoga was developed as a science for healthy living at Physical, Mental and Spiritual levels. It gives the science of evolution of the mind and is aimed at the highest goal of life, the spiritual realization of the embodied Soul.
It was Maharishi Patanjali who nearly 4000 years before expounded the science of Yoga in systematic way, in his Patanjali Yoga Sutras. The yoga sutras are arranged in four chapters. The sage Patanjali starts the first chapter with the description of Samadhi or the state of Super Consciousness. In the subsequent chapters, he describes the various steps and processes to achieve this highest state of Samadhi, including the obstacles encountered in the process. These steps have come down to us as ‘Ashtanga Yoga’ or the eight limbs of yoga. They are Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi.
After Maharishi Patanjali many Yogi sects proliferated and different sects interpreted Yoga in their own way. Now hundred types of Yoga are being practised in the world and even the word YOG has been replaced by west with the word YOGA.
What is PAWAN YOG and Why it is needed NOW ?
Today, our society is facing different problems due to bad life style, stress, cut throat competition, materialism, and lack of exercise and Simran (meditation). All this leads to generation of negative thoughts and bad toxins. We are allured by the materialistic world and are therefore never content. This discontentment gives rise to stress, depression, negative thinking which in turn leads to physical and mental ailments and which further leads to increase in intake of drugs and medicines.
We cannot go back 548 years back to the days of Nanak. But Guru Nanak Dev Ji gives us the five Super Health Technology in the shape of Jap Ji Shaloak as a Riddle, which we have to decipher and understand from Health point of view.Practically we have to learn and work on these technology to make our Physical,Mental and Spiritual health balanced.
"ਪਵਣੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਧਰਤਿ ਮਹਤੁ ॥ ਦਿਵਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਦਾਈ ਦਾਇਆ ਖੇਲੈ ਸਗਲ ਜਗਤੁ ॥"

1,Pawan Guru Yog... Nanak says Pawan is our Guru on this Earth planet and Pawan (Air) also works as our Guru in our biological System. From medical and scientific point of view we will share how Oxygen and other related gases are important for our Physical, Mental and Spiritual Health. 2. Pani Pita Yog... Nanak says that Water is our Father(protector). Water protects our blue planet Earth and protect all living beings. Water is a living thing in our body.
"ਪਹਿਲਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਜੀਉ ਹੈ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ" How water should be consumed to make our body and mind healthy.
3. Mata Dharat Mahat Yog.... Mother Earth gives all the essential nutrients as food for the survival of all living being. How to use it in natural form is more important. We will discuss this in details in concerned area.
4.Divas Yog ....means Sun rays and we are advised to play with sun rays to get our necessary daily quota of Vitamin D3 to keep every cell healthy and happy. We will explain how !
5. Raat Yog..... We have to take proper Sleep for 6-8 hours and encourage EARTHING of our body. Why Earthing is important for our wellbeing will be discussed here.
Guru Nanak Times
Guru Nanak was born in 1469 into a relatively high caste Hindu family. At a very young age, he began questioning everything: the empty rituals that seemed meaningless; the arbitrary division of people based on caste; the lower status of women. Guru Nanak was famous for challenging his family, his elders, and his society—not in a rebellious way, but like a devoted son trying to wake others from a self-imposed sleep.
The story goes that one morning, while taking his bath before his meditation, Guru Nanak immersed himself in the water and did not resurface for three days. His breath became so still and so deep that he could sustain himself under the water. During those three days, he had his enlightenment experience. He saw the Cosmic play of Divine Consciousness, and the role and purpose of human life within it.
After having this vision, Guru Nanak recorded his experiences in JAP ji Sahib, The Song of the Soul. Jap ji Sahib is Guru Nanak’s own description of his own enlightenment experience as a realized Yogi. But the gift of Jap ji is the power of the Shabad Guru. When Guru Nanak recited Jap ji Sahib, he brought a new Spiritual Technology to humanity.
Reciting Jap ji with devotion and love will allow a person to slowly, over time, develop the ability to see what Guru Nanak saw. The Shabad (Word)can take a person to that place of light and merger with the Divine.
When Guru Nanak went out to the world he began spreading his message. He went to many spiritual centres and everywhere he went he helped people and enlightened their minds. Many times, he confronted the priests in charge and talked them out of blind rituals in favour of an honest true longing for the Creator. Once he visited a sacred site high in the Himalayan mountains. Recognizing his spiritual light many yogis came to see who this young new comer was.
Sidhha Goshth is a record of the conversation between Guru Nanak and the Sidhhas, a group of Nath Yogis which the Guru met on his travels to the Himalayan mountains. 'Goshth' means discussion, Sidhha Goshth is the detailed transcript of the questions posed to Guru Nanak by the Yogis and the Gurus answers. It is a great philosophical discussion in which the Guru answers the
Yogis questions about the meaning of life, GOD and Creation.
Is Gur Nanak Dev did any Yoga as explained above ?
NANAK did not do any Yog the way we explained above. Nanak sings HIS name in such an INTENSITY that His singing becomes YOG. For NANAK, everything which is happening in this vast Universe is YOG. That is why Nanak says in Jap Ji Sahib.
ਸੁਣਿਐ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਤਨਿ ਭੇਦ ॥ (Listening is also a way of Yog and just when listening properly one can understands the secrete of body and nature.)
ਅਸੰਖ ਜੋਗ ਮਨਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਉਦਾਸ ॥(There are countless Yog and Yogis, whose minds remain detached from the world)
Nanak used to walk 20 koss (40 Miles) daily and for Nanak Walking was also a Yog, that is why He said in Siri Rag, Ang 16
ਬਾਬਾ ਹੋਰੁ ਚੜਣਾ ਖੁਸੀ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥ ਜਿਤੁ ਚੜਿਐ ਤਨੁ ਪੀੜੀਐ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥
( Nanak says the pleasures of other rides are false, by such rides the body is ruined, wickedness and corruption enter in to the mind) At Nanak time 548 years before there was only Horses and Elephants for rides. But now we have innumerable rides around us and our health are ruined and spoiled.
